One of my goals this year is to loosen up. To help accomplish that goal I began studying with Kim English at the Art Student's League. In each class we warm up with a series of 3 minute paintings. This is a 24" x 36" abstract oil painting depicting the emotional turmoil in one's life that twists and turns, but seeing and knowing that there is the lightness beyond all this underneath it all. The turmoil and the emotions move through life, fluxing and undulating but the lightness of being is always there in the background helping dissolve the negativity. Let the emotions pass through knowing that they are just doing that - passing through.

Egg Harbor Boat and Cape Cod Light

"Cape Cod Lighthouse and 1987 34 foot Egg Harbor Boat" departing Hyannis Marina in Cape Cod with the lighthouse and structures in the background. I painted this painting for the owner of the boat in the painting. He did not have a photo of his boat from a 1/4 angle but wanted the painting at that angle. I used 6 photos he sent of his boat and the shore line from other angles, and did some guess work. The background image came from a photo he took from his right side of his boat when leaving the harbor and the sky is amazing. This is an 18 x 24 watercolor on Arches 140 lb cold press.

This was the third of 3 test pieces I did for my larger painting that will be donated to the Susan G Komen "Pink Tie Affair" auction. I have had to re work that painting THREE times!! The first time I poured it, it dried with a few little chunks that I missed seeing. I then dug out the chunks, gessoed those spots and re poured those places , but it did not look good. Finally i had to texturize the entire canvas, re gesso and re pour the entire painting. It is almost dry, again, so we shall see if it is good now.I need to deliver it early this next week.This little painting is on 140 lb watercolor paper ans will fit a standard 8x10 frame. or may be matted and framed to a larger size.&4.70 will be donated to the Breast Cancer community.CLUB 47 FRIENDS...IT HAS BEEN A TOUGH WEEK HERE...we have been in crisis mode.....

Thanks to all who visited my studio during the Longmont Studio Tour Weekend! Lots of new faces as well as a few that I hadn't seen in a few years. It was nice to catch up. Though it is a lot of work preparing for the event, it is always well worth it. I'm still trying to catch my breath.

As I sit here with Ziggy laying across my feet (big orange kitty, on his back, feet in the air and doing a great job of imitating road kill), we are contemplating the direction my art should go in. Some of it is what I call the 'Traditional Still Life' genre. It is always nice, safe, sells, rarely stimulates conversation.
On the other hand, is what I call my 'Gotta Laugh to Keep from Crying' (aka contemporary still life) genre. It is always fun, frustrating, makes me laugh and curse at the same time, rarely sells but always engages the viewer and generates conversation.

See my dilemma? Sell or not to sell? Stimulating to some or stimulating to several? Safe or fun/frustrating? Ziggy and I are not agreeing on this fork in the road. In fact we kind of have a bet going on as to the outcome.
